The Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3 introduces a unique secondary quest titled There Can Be Only One, located in the picturesque duchy of Toussaint. This quest challenges Geralt of Rivia to prove his adherence to the five chivalric virtues before earning a legendary reward. Understanding how to fulfill each condition efficiently ensures players unlock one of the most powerful silver swords available in the game.

Starting the Quest at Lac Celavy

To initiate this quest, players can pick up a notice from the boards in Beauclair or travel directly to Lac Célavy northwest of the city. In the center of the lake, Geralt will meet a mysterious hermit who watches over a sacred pool. The hermit explains that only a warrior who embodies compassion, generosity, honor, valor, and wisdom can claim the blade hidden beneath the surface.

Demonstrating the Five Chivalric Virtues

Proving your worth requires making specific choices across various quests throughout the Toussaint region. For instance, showing compassion can be achieved by sparing the beast during the main storyline. Generosity is demonstrated simply by tipping the young messenger boy who delivers a letter to Geralt in Beauclair.

To satisfy honor, players can accept and win a mounted duel against Prince Anseis during the grand tournament. Valor is earned by winning the entire tourney or defeating formidable monsters in local contracts. Finally, wisdom is proven by correctly answering riddles during primary missions or lifting curses peacefully.

Defeating the Hermit in Combat

Once all five virtues have been validated, Geralt must return to Lac Célavy to speak with the hermit once again. The guardian will then challenge the witcher to a final duel upon the water's surface to test his martial prowess. Defeating him in combat completes the final requirement of the trial.

Claiming the Aerondight Relic Sword

Upon victory, the hermit vanishes into the water and the Lady of the Lake emerges to bestow the legendary silver sword known as Aerondight. This relic weapon is widely considered the finest silver sword in the entire game due to its distinct scaling mechanics. Each successful strike increases damage output, making it an invaluable tool for late-game encounters and New Game Plus adventures.
